Scenario example written in the Articulate 360 Rise scenario block format
When the learner doesn't ask optimal questions the first time they are penalized and must call to obtain the proper information.
Solution: A branching simulation would give the desired level of difficulty and fun as well as testing the learner’s skills. A combination of interactive learning and animated segments were selected for this task. As well, a gender and race neutral character was designed to represent the learner within the simulation. Rather than correcting wrong answers, realistic feedback was required. We accomplished this by having a manager not only set up the story line but also follow up by calling the learner/player on the phone whenever they made a significant mistake. Three of these calls would lead to the player being taken off the project and having to start over again, similar to three “deaths” in a video game. Some technical errors were permitted; however, their presence affected the outcome by having either a happy customer, a bothered customer or an angry customer at the finish.
Outcome: The client was very happy with the result. It met their need for having a realistic context, the requirement of technical skill, and the element of fun which both provided motivation and befitted a practice exercise where the worst thing that can happen is that you have to do it over again. It is worth mentioning that we won this contract in competition against a much larger provider after submitting a design and prototype. It was delivered on time and on budget.
